Dylan Kelly was born in Cork and studied piano and guitar from the age of ten years old onwards. He studied music for Junior and Leaving Cert, taking part during in the Composers in the Classroom initiative as a transition year student, culminating in having a piece he cowrote performed and recorded by the Irish Chamber Choir. As a teenager, he also attended masterclasses with David Syme and Jan Cap, alongside brief forays into jazz piano. He graduated with first class honours from the BMus degree in MTU Cork School of Music in 2023, having studied piano under Santa Ignace.

During his degree, he had the opportunity to gain experience singing in choirs, namely Fleischmann Choir and Coro, performing in concerts and taking part in competitions with both. He also played in chamber music groups, which led to him placing second in the CSM Vanbrugh Quartet Chamber Music Competition as part of the Scherzando Trio. Aside from performance, he had the opportunity to study counterpoint under Séamas de Barra and composition under Andy Ingamells, the latter of which led to the opportunity to compose a short piece for members of Crash Ensemble as part of Munster Technological University’s Innovation & Enterprise Month 2022. He has given public recitals in St Finbarre’s Cathedral, Cork School of Music’s Curtis Auditorium, Intermediate School Killorglin, and the Crawford Art Gallery.

Outside of the world of classical music, he has performed in popular music groups since he was a teenager, in recent years undertaking a number of successful tours around Ireland and the UK, playing festivals, and releasing a full length LP. He is hoping to carry out a Masters by research in MTU Cork School of Music from September, focusing on the work of Irish composers in the second half of the twentieth century. Alongside his studies, he hopes to continue performing and teaching piano from home.
